Consider things regarding many aspect beforehand: whether you are the first one to establish a quilting shop in town, and then what motivated you to do so, whether you have workshops on quilting to teach novices the art, whether your quilts can been used for humanitarian causes. Other important points in your article would be the offer of quilts displayed, whether you have special or unique materials for sale, or whether one of your quilts were sold to famous people. On the other hand, emphasize on the fact that quilting is not only about hand work, but it's also about sewing machines and stuff. If you manage to successfully elaborate on some of these points above, then the newspaper editor will surely be interested by what you're bringing new to the market.
Writing quilting articles to advertise your business encompasses two options; one would be to write the piece then submit it for consideration to the editors or representatives of the newspaper. Another approach would be to firstly contact the editors, to check upon their interest and then write the actual article.
Thus, it may seem that contacting media before actually writing the article would be advisable, since you won't lose any time writing an article that nobody would want published. Since local newspapers are sometimes in search for news and articles, it would make a difference if they accepted your article.
Since you probably won't receive any compensation for the article, rest assured because you will gain local publicity and possibly, local recognition. Your quilt shop will attract more customers, asking for different services.
What happens if you don't have any writing skills whatsoever? There are some options out there for you and the first and normal one is to ask for someone's help in writing your article.
Journalism students would love to be involved in this type of work and gain some experience in the field. They would also be glad to receive recommendation letters as the form of compensation for their work.
Another option is to contact the editor and request an assigned writer to deal with your needs and publish information on the quilting industry. If your request is interesting and popular enough, you might even feature on the top cover of the paper.
Writing such publicity articles would surely attract interested people to the desired place. Sales will also increase because with more visitors come more money. All you need is to know well what you're advertising and the contents of the story you will talk about. After that, all will come by itself.
