Guidelines for Quilting Beginners in Selecting the Appropriate Tools

Quilts represent fabrics which are created by man in an original way. The combination of fabrics commonly includes cotton materials, while polyester materials are usually avoided. With a variety of cotton materials to choose from, you need to take into consideration several things.

Style Tips

Quilts are presented in different types, and to give you just a few examples, consider the Feminine, Victorian, Country, Lodge, Country, Modern, Juvenile or Conventional Amish styles.

Now to go on describing some details of each style, the Victorian and Feminine quilts traditionally displays floral motives and coordinating patters or colors. The cottage quilts are colored in brighter shade, using tones such as white, camel, beige or fawn. Country quilts bring a little from the colors of dusty tones which are evenly combined with solid shade. This is why country quilts come out in pairs of colors, from off-whites to flag colors which complement each other to form an exciting quilt pattern.

The lodge quilts are represented by shaded prints, which remind of the wooden colors imprinted.
The variegated colors include green, rust, red, brown, tan and black shades which also give the color for Lodge quilting.

Conventional Amish quilts also bear striking colors, gemstone shades placed on a background of a solid color, especially against a black shade.

The modern quilting types are the latest developments in the market and combine simple lines in squared models.

The Juvenile style of quilting is made of striking pastels and crayon shades, tones or colors. The Juvenile types combine, like the modern ones, solid backgrounds with differently-colored print.

After you ponder sufficiently on the style you will use for your quilts, you need to select the fabrics and take some measurements of them. Remember that the fabrics should allow washing and not bleed when washed, therefore ensure the fabric is strong enough to withstand washing without any shade of the dye in it.

After you have purchase the fabric, be careful to cut correctly the parts of it that you will need. This fact is known in the terminology of quilters as 'Cut the grain'. Besides cutting, you have to buy fillers and make sure you know how to correctly combine filters with the material to that the quilt keeps its original design. 'Batting' is the word designed to mean choice of style in the specialized terminology and 'flatters' refers to matching the material together. The batting can be made of polyester while for the flatters you can choose between cotton, wools and other available materials.
To offer you some assistance in choosing your style and fabric, please consider the following issues.

First of all, figure out whether you want to do your work by hand or with the help of the machine. Then think about the size of your work. Big or small? Depending on the size, you will spend more or less time on it so time is another aspect you should consider. Next, come washing issues, whether your quilt will need to be washed regularly, in that case you will choose a quilt resistant to washing, or whether the quilt will be just for the pleasure of display, and thus you can choose whatever fabric you want to.
After considering these aspects, you should be able to make an educated decision. However, if you're still having a hard time deciding what to do, visit specialized shops and ask for some guidance there. Characteristics of the fabrics are usually written on the labels. For more information, also browse through the Internet.

You can even ask for pre-packaged sets, which already include the batting and other tools If you choose such a package, you must know that you will reduce a great of time, not having to search for 'every nook and cranny' you will need. These packages are all medium-sized and designed for average beds.

Provided that you want to buy a bigger quantity of batting, make sure that is was not previously shrunk, because otherwise you won't be capable to carry the entire quantity to your place. Also, remember that batting is especially useful in smaller projects and that they are difficult to handle with to suit different patterns.
